In 2010-something, FiLLi Cafe was a small tea stall in Dubai known for one thing: Zafran Chai. Saffron tea. That’s it.
Today it has 100+ outlets across the UAE, a cult following, and a brand that people genuinely love — not just use.
I’ve been the Head of Brand & Growth for most of that journey. And the single most expensive mistake we made wasn’t a campaign. It wasn’t a bad agency. It wasn’t even a logo change.
It was confusing product quality with brand positioning.
For years we thought: if the chai is great, the brand will take care of itself. Just keep the quality high. Word will spread.
And it did spread. But slowly. And without direction.
What we didn’t realize is that product quality answers the question “is this good?” Brand positioning answers the question “why does this exist and who is it for?”
Those are completely different questions. You need both answers — and they need to be consistent.
FiLLi is not a cafe. It’s not a tea shop. It’s the place that makes you feel like you’re back in a small town kitchen somewhere in South Asia, even if you’re standing in a glass tower in Dubai Marina. That feeling — that specific emotional territory — is the brand.
Once we got clear on that, everything else got easier:
- What the interior should feel like
- How staff should greet people
- What social content to make (and what to stop making)
- Why we should NOT expand into coffee even when customers asked
Brand positioning is a filter. Without it, every decision is a debate.
Some things that surprised us along the way:
- The brand was stronger in the diaspora than we thought. South Asian expats in Dubai weren’t just buying chai. They were buying a memory. We leaned into that late.
- Influencer marketing almost hurt us. Early on, we did the usual — send product, get posts. It felt off-brand every time. The influencers weren’t wrong. The brief was wrong. We didn’t have a clear enough brand to brief against.
- Patience is a brand strategy. We had years where nothing seemed to be working externally, but internally we were building consistency. That consistency is what compounds. Fast growth without brand clarity just scales confusion.
Happy to answer questions. Been building brands in the UAE and GCC for 25 years — now writing more openly about what actually works vs what sounds good in a deck.
